Habits & Behavior

The Broad-billed Hummingbird is an active and fast-moving bird that spends most of its day searching for food. It feeds mainly on nectar from flowers but also eats tiny insects for protein. This hummingbird uses its long bill and tongue to reach deep inside flowers.

It is known for being very territorial, especially around feeders or flowering plants. Males often sit on a branch and watch their feeding area, quickly chasing away intruders.

During the breeding season, the female builds a tiny cup-shaped nest using plant fibers and spider silk. She lays very small white eggs and takes care of the chicks alone.

Unlike some hummingbirds that migrate long distances, the Broad-billed Hummingbird often stays in warm regions but may move short distances depending on the season and food availability.
